Influence of Prior Austenite Deformation and Non-Metallic Inclusions on Ferrite in Low Carbon Steels

Abstract Effects of prior austenite deformation and non-metallic inclusions on the ferrite nucleation and grain refinement of two kinds of low carbon steels have been studied. The ferrites nucleation on MnS and V(C,N) is observed. The combination of thermal-mechanical processes with adequate amounts of non-metallic inclusions formed in low carbon steels could effectively refine the grain size and the microstructure. Ferrite nucleated on the single MnS or V(C,N) inclusions and complex MnS+V(C,N) inclusion. The proper addition of elements S and V could effectively promote the formation of ferrite and further refinement of ferrite grains.

Effect of TaC Particles Dissolution on Grain Coarsening in Reduced Activation Steels

The effect of TaC on grains and packets coarsening in the reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steels was investigated. It was found that the combined effect of the austenitizing temperature and heating rate resulted in the heterogeneous austenite grain growth. When the austenitizing temperature was raised above 1423 K, the TaC particles disappeared, and the homogenous grains abruptly increased. The thermodynamic model for dissolution of TaC particles during austenitizing was applied to interpret the results.

Weldability of 780 MPa Super-High Strength Heavy-Duty Truck Crossbeam Steel

CO2-shielded welding experiments of newly developed, 780 MPa super-high strength heavy-duty truck crossbeam steel were conducted, and the microstructure, microhardness, mechanical properties, and impact toughness of the welded joint were studied. The evolution of the microstructure of the welded joint occurred as follows: welding seam (acicular ferrite+proeutectoid ferrite)→fusion zone (granular bainite-long strip M/A island)→coarse grain zone (granular bainite-long strip or short bar M/A island)→fine grain zone (ferrite+pearlite+blocky M/A island)→mixed grained zone (ferrite+granular bainite+blocky M/A island)→base metal (proeutectoid ferrite+granular bainite-blocky or granular M/A island). Increasing the density of the grain boundaries can effectively improve the impact toughness, and the blocky M/A island hindered crack propagation more effectively than the long strip M/A island. The new hot-rolled 780 MPa super-high strength steel had excellent weldability. The welding technology was applied under the following conditions: welding voltage was 20 to 21 V, welding current was 200 to 210 A, and the gas flow rate was 25 L/min.

Evolution and Coarsening of Carbides in 2.25Cr-1Mo Steel Weld Metal During High Temperature Tempering

Transformation and coarsening of carbides in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel weld metal during tempering at 700 oC for different time intervals ranging from 1 to 150 h has been examined by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. M3C carbides were observed in the as-welded specimens and when tempered the precipitates were mainly composed of M3C, M7C3 and M23C6 carbides. A sequence for corresponding carbide transformation during tempering with initial precipitation of M3C and followed by M7C3 and M23C6 has been proposed. The precipitation of M7C3 with higher Cr content is the main factor contributing to the decrease of coarsening rate of precipitates after prolonged tempering. The decrease of hardness in the tempered specimens agreed well with the prediction of the weakening of precipitation strengthening due to the coarsening of carbides.

Studies of the anion position parameter chi of the ternary semiconductor CuGaS2 by use of Ni+ ion probe

The anion position parameter chi of NiS4 cluster formed in the ternary semiconductor CuGaS2 by substitution of Ni+ for Cu+ has been determined by studying the optical spectra and EPR data for CuGaS2:Ni+. The result (chi approximate to 0.263(1)) is consistent with the mean value of the X-ray measurement results reported in two groups of references and also with the calculated value obtained from the conservation of tetrahedral bonds (CTB) plus eta = eta(tet) rule (where eta = c/2a). So, we suggest that the anion position parameter chi in pure CuGaS2 crystal is close to the above value obtained by use of Ni+ ion probe. The optical absorption bands and g factors g(parallel to), g(perpendicular to), of CuGaS2: Ni+ are therefore explained reasonably from the anion position parameter. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The morphology of the dark and bright regions observed by transmission electron microscopy for the Zr(64.13)Cu(15.75)Ni(10.12)Al(10) bulk metallic glass strongly depends on the ion beam parameters used for ion milling. This indicates that the ion beam could introduce surface fluctuation to metallic glasses during ion milling.

Influences of variations of characteristic parameters of protein molecules on states of soliton transported bio-energy

We simulate numerically the dynamic properties of new soliton with quasi-coherent two quanta in the improved model by fourth-order Runge-Kutta way. We observed that the window of formation of new soliton is shifted toward smaller values of coupling constants when compared with the Davydov's soliton with one quantum and Forner's soliton with two quantum model. The new soliton formation starts at (chi 1 + chi 2) = 20 PN, and pinning starts from (chi 1 + chi 2) = 86 PN. The pinned solitons are also observed if both quanta are on the same end of the chain in the initial state. The behaviors of new soliton are varied under influences for variations of characteristic parameters arising from the structure nonuniformity of protein molecules. Although the new soliton is also sensitive to the dipole-dipole interaction and diagonal disorder, the sensitivity to the impurity is weaker than that of the Davydov's and Forner's solitons. Therefore, the new soliton is robust against the fluctuations of coupled constant, dipole-dipole interaction and diagonal disorder arising from the impurity or structure nonuniformity, when compared with that of the Davydov's and Forner's solitons.

Three-dimensional (3D) Ising universality in magnets and critical indices at fluid-fluid phase transition

Experimental data for critical exponents in some magnetic materials are compared with recent theoretical results on the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model, as derived by one of us (ZDZ) based on two conjectures [Z.D. Zhang, Conjectures on the exact solution of three-dimensional (3D) simple orthorhombic Ising lattices, Phil. Mag. 87 (2007), pp. 5309-5419]. It is found that critical exponents in some bulk magnetic materials indeed form a 3D Ising universality. Our attention is then focused on the critical indices at fluid-fluid phase transition. We suggest to use Zhang's exponent = 3/8 to fit the experimental data over the wider asymptotic region near the critical point of a fluid-fluid phase transition. The 3D Ising universality should exist for critical indices in a certain class of magnets and at fluid-fluid phase transition.
